No-Fear LANAP Periodontal Laser Treatment | LANAP Procedure
LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a minimally invasive laser treatment that targets diseased gum tissue while preserving healthy tissue, promoting gum regeneration, and allowing for quicker healing. Your dentist at James Island Dental Associates or Johns Island Dental Associates may use a No-Fear LANAP Procedure to treat gum disease, especially in cases where traditional methods like scaling and root planing alone may not be effective.
What Is Involved in a LANAP Procedure?
When your Charleston dentist recommends LANAP to treat your moderate to severe gum disease, we want you to know what to expect. Here is what happens during a LANAP procedure.
- Dental exam: Your dentist will probe and inspect your gums to determine the level of periodontal disease present. He may also use 3D Cone Beam panoramic imaging for the best perspectives.
- First laser application: Your dentist will next insert a tiny laser fiber that’s about the size of a human hair from a PerioLase® MVP-7 laser between the tooth and gum to clear away infection and remove diseased gum tissue.
- Next, your dentist will thoroughly clean the tooth roots to ensure all plaque and tartar are removed. This may involve more traditional methods like scaling and root planning.
- Second laser application: A different setting on the laser is now used to create a blood clot that seals off the pocket around your teeth.
- After your treatment is completed, the dentist will share instructions about recovery and oral care. Most patients recover quickly with little discomfort and return to work or normal activities the next day.
Important Facts
Here are a few additional facts about your LANAP treatment:
- Your dentist typically treats one-half of your mouth during each session. You will need to return for the second half.
- Most sessions last about two hours.
- Laser energy stimulates bone regeneration and the formation of new connective tissue attachments to tooth root surfaces.
- The laser leaves healthy gum tissue unharmed and has no degenerative effect on your teeth.
- LANAP procedures are offered at both James Island Dental and Johns Island Dental by the same reliable dentists you know and trust.
