LANAP Laser Procedures James Island & Charleston
One of our goals at James Island Dental Associates is to keep every procedure as comfortable and efficient for our patients as possible. We recognize that popular media often cracks jokes about dentistry being uncomfortable or unpleasant, and this is unfortunate. The reality is that new technologies and techniques are constantly being developed that make getting the dental care you need to stay healthy much more comfortable than in the past.
LANAP (laser assisted new attachment procedure) is a new way to treat periodontal disease that avoids the need for surgery with a scalpel or sutures. With LANAP, you can have periodontal treatment done and return to work the next day.
Dr. Weir is the first dentist in South Carolina to be trained and licensed in the LANAP procedure. LANAP is an FDA-approved treatment for moderate to severe gum disease and has been used successfully by Dr. Weir for many years.
Why Do We Choose LANAP for Our Patients?
Performing periodontal treatments with a laser offers a number of advantages over conventional surgical methods, including:
Less risk of bleeding both during and after the procedure
Greater comfort during the procedure and while healing
More precision to prevent unnecessary loss of healthy tissue
Faster rate of healing following the procedure
Shorter treatment times than with conventional surgery, often less than 24 hours
No scalpels or suturing is necessary
Results last longer
Why We Treat Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is a serious, chronic health condition. This infection begins as mild gingivitis and often initially has no signs or symptoms. As the condition progresses, you may experience bad breath and bleeding when you brush and floss. In these early stages, gum disease can be reversed with changes to your home care routine.
Without treatment, however, gum disease progresses into periodontitis. In this stage, serious damage can occur to the soft gum tissue as well as the underlying bone structure that holds your teeth securely in place. Gum disease is not just a concern for the appearance of your mouth. Recent research has linked gum disease to a range of serious health conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some types of cancers, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Pregnant women with periodontal disease are more likely to give birth to underweight babies.
At James Island Dental Associates, we take your health very seriously, and that’s why we offer top-of-the-line treatments for periodontal disease, including LANAP.

MORE QUESTIONS?
Periodontal disease can wreak havoc in your mouth, damaging your gum tissue and your periodontal bone. In some cases, bone loss around teeth can be moderate to severe. When there is an excess of unhealthy, infected gum tissue, we recommend periodontal laser surgery (or LANAP).
Before performing the treatment, we first numb you so the procedure is not uncomfortable. Next, your mouth is charted to determine the extent of the bone loss. The Periolase laser is then passed along each infected tooth to remove the diseased tissue.
After the first pass of the laser, your teeth are professionally scaled and cleaned. The laser is then passed along the teeth and as it is pulled out of the deep pocket, it forms a special clot. The clot acts as a barrier so bacteria and debris do not reenter the pocket.
What to Expect After Laser Surgery
After the procedure, there is minimal discomfort. A soft diet is recommended while healing occurs.
The laser allows us to perform this treatment much more precisely and with a lower risk of side effects such as bleeding than conventional surgery with a scalpel. Healing times are often greatly reduced and sutures are usually not needed. If we feel you would benefit from laser surgery for periodontal disease, we’ll discuss your options with you!
