Tooth loss is not just an esthetic issue. Leaving a gap in your smile allows your remaining teeth to shift, which can throw off the natural function of your bite. As a result, you may experience other oral health issues such as periodontal disease, exposed roots, and continued tooth loss.

An Alternative to Implants

Dental implants do not work well for everyone. Some patients have trouble with bone density while others have certain lifestyle habits that limit success. Some may simply want to avoid the surgery and waiting times associated with a dental implant.

A dental bridge requires two healthy adjacent teeth. Dr. Thomas or Dr. Weir use these teeth as a foundation for the bridge, placing dental crowns that will hold an artificial tooth (known as a pontic) in place. They use custom shading to match your dental crowns to your natural teeth so that when you smile, the appearance is seamless. We want people to notice your attractive and friendly smile, not your dental work!

How Long Do Dental Bridges Last?

As with all dentistry, how long restorations will last depends largely upon your dedication to caring for them properly. Dental restorations can last five to seven years – or even longer!

With dental bridges, it is important to avoid chewing any overly hard or chewy foods, which can damage the restoration. You will also need to keep the gums around and underneath your bridge clean. Special brushes and floss threaders can make this process easier, and we are happy to demonstrate the correct way to brush and floss with a dental bridge. We will evaluate your dental bridge at each exam and make sure that it is still stable and functioning properly.

Dental Implants

The first is a dental implant, which acts as an anchor in the bone and a crown that attaches to the implant. The dental implant mimics a natural tooth by adding security and offering a permanent solution. The crown created to replace the tooth will be carefully crafted to blend in with your other teeth.

Dental Bridge

The second is a fixed bridge, which involves capping the two teeth adjacent to the space. The caps are joined to a pontic (the replacement tooth) and the whole unit is cemented onto the adjacent teeth. This option provides security and completes your smile, but doesn’t offer the same benefits as implants. When multiple teeth are missing, we can discuss using implants to hold a bridge in place, which allows us to avoid altering otherwise healthy teeth.

Partial Denture

The third option is a removable partial denture, which has the missing teeth attached to it and clasps that slide over your natural teeth to help it stay in place. This removable appliance will require extra care on your part and may need to occasionally be refitted; however, it’s an option that many people find easily affordable.
