Dental Technology & Dental Imaging
Offering advanced dental technologies in-house for ease and comfort
The technology we make use of in our practice improves the quality of the care we provide. Before introducing new technologies to our office, we consider how it makes your treatment more accurate, successful, or comfortable.
3D Dental Imaging (CBCT)
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) creates three-dimensional images that we can use to either diagnose a condition or plan treatment. Because the 3-D image gives us an accurate view of all the structures surrounding your mouth, including muscles, nerves, and sinus cavities, we can precisely place implants with a high rate of success. Patient safety is one of our top priorities, which is why we use Planmeca ProMax 3D, which allows us to considerably reduce radiation exposure during imagine.
Dental Restorations (CEREC)
In the past, getting a crown placed involved a wait of one to two weeks while an off-site dental lab crafted your crown. Today, CEREC technology allows us to design and mill your crown right here in our office in a single visit. This allows for greater convenience and avoids the need for temporary restorations.
Intra Oral Cameras
It can sometimes be difficult to describe what we see in a way that allows our patients to fully understand our concerns. Intra-oral cameras, however, allow you to see what we see – if you would like! The handheld camera sends images to a monitor near your chair so you can see damaged areas of a tooth, inflamed gum tissue, a lesion that needs watching, and more.
Diagnodent
The earlier we can identify and treat problems, the more conservative the treatment. We can usually identify a developing cavity before it causes you any kind of pain, but Diagnodent allows us to identify cavities even before they are visible to our trained eyes. This allows for proactive care that may even stop a developing cavity in its tracks, saving you a filling. If a filling is needed, we can preserve the healthy structure of your tooth by removing the smallest amount necessary.
Digital Radiographs (X-Rays)
X-rays are one of the most tried and true ways we have of identifying dental problems. Many problems develop under the surface of your teeth and gums, and if we wait until they are visible, a great deal of damage can be done. Using x-rays, we can catch problems in their earliest stages, before they can hurt you or cause damage, and treat them promptly and proactively. By making the decision to go digital, we can accomplish several goals: Digital x-rays expose you to as much as 80% less radiation than conventional film x-rays.
Because the x-ray is a digital file instead of a large piece of film, it can be securely stored in your electronic file for fast retrieval. If we need to send your x-rays to a specialist or share them with your insurance company, this can be accomplished electronically in the blink of an eye. Digital x-rays don’t require chemicals to develop or physical space for storage, making them a smarter choice for the environment and reducing the footprint of our practice. The image can be enhanced in a number of ways, making it an outstanding teaching tool so you can be an active participant in your own care.
Periolase Laser
Dental lasers are just one of the ways in which dentistry has truly moved into the 21st century! Lasers use concentrated light energy to treat diseased tissue. In our practice, we use our Periolase laser to perform periodontal surgeries, which can range from precisely removing tissue damaged by periodontal disease while preserving healthy tissue to improving the appearance of your smile by recontouring your gum tissue. Lasers offer several advantages over traditional surgical procedures. They allow for much more precise tissue removal, reduce bleeding and discomfort, and increase the rate of healing.

MORE QUESTIONS?
Each case can be different, but three options are available for you:
Dental Implant
The first is a dental implant, which acts as an anchor in the bone and a crown that attaches to the implant. The dental implant mimics a natural tooth by adding security and offering a permanent solution. The crown created to replace the tooth will be carefully crafted to blend in with your other teeth.
Dental Bridge
The second is a fixed bridge, which involves capping the two teeth adjacent to the space. The caps are joined to a pontic (the replacement tooth) and the whole unit is cemented onto the adjacent teeth. This option provides security and completes your smile, but doesn’t offer the same benefits as implants. When multiple teeth are missing, we can discuss using implants to hold a bridge in place, which allows us to avoid altering otherwise healthy teeth.
Partial Denture
The third option is a removable partial denture, which has the missing teeth attached to it and clasps that slide over your natural teeth to help it stay in place. This removable appliance will require extra care on your part and may need to occasionally be refitted; however, it’s an option that many people find easily affordable.
At James Island Dental Associates, Dr. Weir and Dr. Thomas are proud to provide comprehensive implant dentistry. The benefit to you is that when you get dental implants in James Island, SC, you will be working with one of our dentists and the team members you know and trust.
First Step of Implant Process
After you’ve completed an initial implant consultation to determine if this is the right procedure for your needs, the next step is placing the implant. Dr. Weir and Dr. Thomas utilize advanced 3-D technology to help them plan the placement of your implant well before the procedure. This pre-treatment planning results in more accuracy, precision, and a reliable outcome on the day of your surgery.
After Implant Placement
Once we successfully place your implant, we give it time to heal and integrate fully with bone in your jaw. In this way, the implant becomes a permanent part of your dental anatomy just as your tooth root was. The healing process can take anywhere from three to six months.
When you complete the healing process, our dentists create your final restoration. We can use implants to replace a single missing tooth with a durable and aesthetic porcelain crown. They are also capable of supporting multiple tooth replacement prosthetics such as a bridge or denture.
